What Fairtrade does
Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, sustainability, and fairer terms of trade for farmers and workers. By requiring companies to pay fair and sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which often discriminates against the poorest, most marginalised producers.

We have switched to Fairtrade certified tea and coffee products in our kitchen because supporting an environmentally responsible and socially just world is important to our business. As is being fair for all and environmentally responsible so now, we’re making it known in the kitchen, too.

Who we are helping
Guzman Nunez Torres, a coffee farmer from the Unicafec cooperative in Peru, told us about the transformational impact of Fairtrade certification.
“There’s a visible change in front of your eyes,” he said.
“Before, we used to work as if we were a ship in the sea with the engine turned off, adrift. You go wherever the sea or the wind takes you. We worked adrift because we didn’t have support or the organisation provided by Fairtrade. It has helped a lot. Because of the training, the processes but also because of the prices. Everybody knows this is the difference and we see it now more than ever, the importance of organising the cooperative and the benefits of Fairtrade.”
By selling coffee beans on Fairtrade terms, Guzman has been able to provide his children with an education, expand his coffee plots, improve his business practices and invest in the future.
