Whatever the fault, we're here to help

The 3 most common types of electrical faults which will cause a device in your switchboard to trip are:

Short Circuit Fault

A short circuit is when electrical current flows directly from an active conductor to ground (ie. a metal frame of an appliance), to a neutral conductor, or to another active conductor on a different phase or voltage. This will cause a huge spike in current which will cause an overcurrent device to trip (fuse or overcurrent circuit breaker). There will often be smoke, a burning smell, or an audible pop when a short circuit occurs.

Common causes of short circuit faults are:

  1. A breakdown of cable insulation overtime caused by heat or rodent damage
  2. A cable being cut or pinched with a metalic conductive object while the cable is still live
  3. Water in a light fitting, power point or electrical enclosure

Overload Fault

An overload fault is when too much electrical current flows in a circuit than the cables in that circuit can handle. This will cause an overcurrent device to trip (fuse or overcurrent circuit breaker) in order to prevent the cable from heating up and potentially causing a fire. There will not be any physical signs that this has occured aside from the sound of a fuse popping or a circuit breaker tripping and some appliances or lights that turn off.

Common causes of overload faults are:

  1. Too many appliances or electrical devices being used at the same time
  2. Incorrect load balancing of an electrical circuit
  3. Not enough supply from the grid (will require a supply upgrade)

Residual Current Fault

A residual current fault is when some electrical current leakage to ground is occuring (commonly called earth leakage) and there is an imbalance of current flow between active and neutral conductors in the circuit. This will cause a residual current device to trip (RCD or commonly known as a safety switch) in order to protect a person or animal from being harmed by the stray current flow. There will not be any physical signs that this has occured aside from the sound of a circuit breaker tripping and some appliances or lights that turn off.

Common causes of residual current faults are:

  1. A breakdown of cable insulation overtime caused by heat or rodent damage
  2. A person or animal touching a live part of an electrical installation
  3. Water in a light fitting, power point or electrical enclosure
