What Is the Electrical Earthing System?

The electrical earthing system forms an integral part of the electrical safety system in every Melbourne home.

It protects you from electric shock by diverting the electric current through the earth wire and into the ground (rather than through your body).

An earthing system, properly installed by a licensed electrician, ensures that objects that are not supposed to be electrically live are not. It also makes sure that protection devices in the switchboard (safety switches) will operate properly in the event of a fault.

The earthing system is made up of:

1. An earth electrode/stake which provides adequate grounding of the electrical installation. It is commonly a copper-clad steel rod that is driven deep into the ground and connected to the switchboard.

2. A main earthing conductor that connects the earth electrode to your switchboard

3. Sub-circuit earthing conductors, or earth cabling, that runs to every light, power point and appliance in your house

A Technical Note...

Australian electrical standards have a strict requirement that the impedance of the main earth is less than 0.5 Ω (ohms) so that it doesn’t affect the proper operation of protective devices.

Older Melbourne Homes and Earthing Issues

If your home doesn't have modern wiring, it may have non-functional or non-existent earth cabling

Older types of cabling (VIR or TRS) relied on a bare (uninsulated) earth wire to be run alongside the cabling to provide earthing of power or lighting circuits. In many cases, the age and deterioration of these old cables means that the earth cable is no longer functioning (if it was ever installed in the first place!).

New safety regulations require all circuits to have their own insulated earthing cable. Modern TPS cabling has an earth wire within the cable insulation, so if installed correctly it provides electrical earthing to any circuits using this modern type of cable.

If you live in an older Melbourne home and are unsure what type of cabling is throughout your house, get in touch with our expert electricians today to arrange an inspection.

Common Problems With Earthing

Do you have no earth wire to your light fittings? Or some other earthing problem?

  • Earthing connected to water pipes – some older homes do not have an earth electrode. The earth wiring is instead connected to metal water pipes in the home. This is no longer an appropriate primary form of protection as it is reliant on the plumbing in the house which could be cut or modified without consulting an electrician
  • No earthing If the earth system is not properly set up, the protective devices in your switchboard may not operate properly, which could lead to a fire or electrocution
  • Corroded connection – if the connection to the earth electrode has corroded then it is no longer providing a good electrical connection and may not be functional

If you've got a problem with the earthing in your home, get in touch with Kenner Electrics' friendly electricians.

Adam and Jimmy were such lovely people and were very easy to communicate with. The job got done very efficiently, and they were always considerate of the home and left no mess whatsoever. After the safety check, they completed some additional works on the same day which worked out perfectly! Would 100% recommend!

Jimmy on site and Shannon in the office have been helpful, courteous, professional and efficient. On time, clearly explained the work to be done and then demonstrated when the work had been completed. Accommodating, competitively priced and responsive. If you need an electrician in South East of Melbourne, these folks are the ones.
We engaged Kenner Electrics, Shannon, Tim and the team to help with Electrical Repair Works. Would like to highlight their absolute professionalism, reliability and friendly service. They not only fix the issue, but also take the time to explain the works being completed in simple terms to the customer. When they inform that they'll arrive at a certain time, you can be absolutely guaranteed they will. Providing excellent Customer Service is paramount for them. Therefore, would recommend them for all your electrical maintenance & repairs.

Found this company on Google, not knowing them previously. Easy to call and book. Additionally, they gave a clear estimated of arrival. The electricians also gave us a pre-call so that we knew they were 30 minutes away. We had Electricians Tim and Max, and they were great! Quick to diagnose the problem, and explain it all to me. Additionally, break down the costing, and asked permission to proceed. We now have a working switch and bathroom fan. The overall end to end process was very professional and to a high standard.
