It protects you from electric shock by diverting the electric current through the earth wire and into the ground (rather than through your body).
An earthing system, properly installed by a licensed electrician, ensures that objects that are not supposed to be electrically live are not. It also makes sure that protection devices in the switchboard (safety switches) will operate properly in the event of a fault.
The earthing system is made up of:
1. An earth electrode/stake which provides adequate grounding of the electrical installation. It is commonly a copper-clad steel rod that is driven deep into the ground and connected to the switchboard.
2. A main earthing conductor that connects the earth electrode to your switchboard
3. Sub-circuit earthing conductors, or earth cabling, that runs to every light, power point and appliance in your house
Australian electrical standards have a strict requirement that the impedance of the main earth is less than 0.5 Ω (ohms)so that it doesn’t affect the proper operation of protective devices.
Older types of cabling (VIR or TRS) relied on a bare (uninsulated) earth wire to be run alongside the cabling to provide earthing of power or lighting circuits. In many cases, the age and deterioration of these old cables means that the earth cable is no longer functioning (if it was ever installed in the first place!).
New safety regulations require all circuits to have their own insulated earthing cable. Modern TPS cabling has an earth wire within the cable insulation, so if installed correctly it provides electrical earthing to any circuits using this modern type of cable.
