Air-Conditioners and Hot Water Units

Electrical Safety Requirements state that all air-conditioning & hot water units must have a lockable isolation switch installed nearby (but not on) the unit. This is so that the unit can be fully isolated for maintenance purposes and is essential for the safety of anyone who works on or maintains your A/C or hot water unit.

Cooktops

Electrical Safety Requirements state that all electric or induction cooktops must have an isolation switch installed close by (but not too close) to the cooktop. This is so that the cooktop can be fully isolated for maintenance purposes and in the event of a fault/incident (eg. cooking fire).

Isolation switches can be retrofitted to existing cooktops for safety, but MUST be installed on all new cooktops.

Common Problems with Isolation Switches

  • No isolation switch – does not meet electrical safety requirements as it cannot be isolated for maintenance or in the case of emergency
  • Isolation switch is located ON the A/C or hot water unit –there have been a number of fatalities of workers due to the installation of isolation switches on A/C and hot water units. If the isolation switch is located on the unit itself, then there is still some live cabling within the unit even when the switch if turned off, which can lead to electrocution
  • Isolation switch is located too close to the cooktop – in the case of an emergency such as a cooking fire, you must be able to isolate power to the cooktop without having to reach OVER the flames to access the switch.

If you don't know whether your isolation switches meet current electrical regulations, give us a call and one of our licensed electricians will be able to help you out.

Had an issue with our smoke detectors and the heat lights in the bathroom. After chatting online with their customer service, an electrician was sent out to our home within a couple of hours and fix has been wonderful so far. They were also great with other inquiries for other installations. Would not hesitate to call on Kenner Electrics again.
