Why Upgrade to LED Downlights?

Halogen downlights were an incredibly popular light fitting throughout the 2000s but there are a number of safety concerns relating to this type of light fitting. Whether you have halogen downlights, incandescent globes or CFL lights, modern LED downlights are now far superior in terms of safety, energy efficiency, longevity and reliability.

Superior Light Output

  • LEDs have a brighter light output than comparable halogen and fluorescent models, which means that with a properly designed lighting plan, you won’t need as many lights to provide the same level of illumination. The brightness of LEDs does not degrade as much over time unlike halogen and fluorescent alternatives.
  • LED lights also come in various colour options to suit your space, so you can choose warm white for your living areas, and a cool white option for your bathroom and kitchen.

Energy Efficiency/Electricity Savings

  • LED downlights use up to 5-10 times less electricity than halogen downlights, which could amount to significant savings on your power bill! There are also great energy savings to be made with upgrading your external lights. Some older incandescent spotlights use hundreds of Watts, compared to an LED floodlight that typically only uses 10 - 30W to provide an even brighter light output!
  • While halogen downlights can reach temperatures of up to 370 degrees Celsius, LED downlights do not produce anywhere near as much heat. This makes it easier to cool your house down in summer, and the sealed LED units also mean that heat cannot escape through gaps in the ceiling in winter, when you want it to stay warm!

Longevity

  • The reliability issues that arose with early LED technology are a thing of the past. Modern LED technology is rated to last around 50,000 hours, which will last you more than a decade! This is more than 6 times longer than halogen downlights. There is also the possibility that Australia will follow Europe’s lead by banning halogen downlights, which will make replacements very hard to find.

Safety

  • The high internal temperatures of halogen downlights are a fire hazard when they are installed too close to insulation or timber. It is common for electricians to find charred timbers in the roof space when upgrading the lighting! LED lights operate at much lower temperatures, and most nowadays are safe to install even fully covered by insulation in your roof

Choose An Option To Suit Your Style

There is an LED option to replace every kind of light, whether you’re looking to upgrade your external lights, oyster lights, downlights or pendant lights.

Kenner Electrics only supplies good quality LED lights from reputable manufacturers, so you can have peace of mind that your lights are compliant with Australian standards, and that the warranties will be honoured.

Issues with Halogen Downlights

Halogen downlights were an incredibly popular light fitting throughout the 2000s but there area number of safety concerns relating to this type of light fitting. Modern LED downlights are now far superior in terms of safety, energy efficiency, longevity and reliability.

  • Heat stress – halogen downlights can reach internal temperatures of up to 370 degrees, which heats up the light fitting as well as the surrounding space. If the halogen downlights are incorrectly installed too close to insulation or timber in the ceiling, they pose a serious fire risk. In 2006, 36house fires were caused by halogen downlights. A good indicator of heat stress is the discolouration of the fitting or flaking paint, and it is common for electricians to find charred timbers in the roof space when upgrading the lighting!
  • Old technology – the transformers in halogen downlights are unreliable and can cause lights to turn on and off randomly. They also operate at a high temperature so they waste a lot of energy in heat output, rather than light
  • Poor light output – halogen downlights lose their brightness quickly, with a 1-2 year old halogen downlight being only half as bright as when it was first installed!
  • Shorter lifespan – halogen downlights are rated to last up to 8,000 hours (which isn’t very much when you compare it to the average LED downlight that is rated to last around 50,000 hours, which will last you more than a decade!)
  • Highly inefficient – halogen downlights use up to 10 times more electricity than LED downlights
  • Possible halogen ban - Europe has recently banned halogen downlight replacements, so if Australia follows suit it will be much harder to buy replacement halogen globes

Had an issue with our smoke detectors and the heat lights in the bathroom. After chatting online with their customer service, an electrician was sent out to our home within a couple of hours and fix has been wonderful so far. They were also great with other inquiries for other installations. Would not hesitate to call on Kenner Electrics again.
