Project Spotlight: Full House Rewire in Box Hill South

Repairing dangerous old wiring and making this home safe again

When a Box Hill South homeowner reached out to us, they were already keen to rewire their whole house — and after a recent electrical scare, they knew it couldn’t wait. A junction box and wiring under the house had overheated so badly that it melted through a cold water pipe, causing a leak in the middle of the home. It was a clear sign that the old wiring, including black rubber cabling, needed urgent attention. The homeowner had also noticed excess wiring at the back of the house that was looking messy and potentially unsafe.

Staged Electrical Rewire with Safety Upgrades

Replacing black rubber cabling and installing arc fault protection devices

We started with a thorough walk-through and inspection, lifting off power points and switches to check how much of the original cabling needed replacing. Insulation had been installed since we were last at the property, so we made sure to factor that in. After chatting through the options and quoting the work, the customer gave us the go-ahead to get started.

We began by rewiring the dangerous black rubber cabling under the house and in the roof. Some areas were tricky to access due to rooftop solar panels, but we worked around it. We also upgraded old subcircuits with arc fault detection devices (AFDD/RCBOs). These offer added protection by detecting faults that standard safety switches can’t pick up.

Why Old Electrical Wiring Puts Homes at Risk

Dangers of outdated rubber, cotton or black wiring in Melbourne homes

Homes built before the 1970s often still contain old rubber, cotton or black cabling, which deteriorates over time. As the insulation breaks down, it can become brittle, cracked, or even completely disintegrated — exposing live wires and creating a serious fire or electric shock risk. These older cables also weren’t designed to handle the electrical load of modern appliances and devices, meaning they’re more likely to overheat or cause safety switches to trip.

Safe, Modern Wiring for Today’s Electrical Needs

Future-proofing the home for EV chargers, solar and smart appliances

A full house rewire replaces these dangerous cables with new, insulated wiring that meets today’s safety standards. It gives you peace of mind knowing your home’s electrical system is safe, reliable and ready to support everything from air conditioning and induction cooktops to EV chargers and future tech. It’s one of the most important upgrades you can make in an older home.

Using Thermal Imaging to Check for Hidden Dangers

Final safety checks ensure no hot joins or wiring faults are missed

To make sure we didn’t miss any hidden issues, we hired a FLIR E8 thermal imaging camera from Kennards Hire in Doncaster and inspected all underfloor wiring for hot joins, along with a full switchboard check.
