House Rewiring Experts in Melbourne

Electrical wiring is in every room of your home and is used every day, every time you switch on a light, every time you use a power outlet and every time you turn on an appliance. But have you ever thought about the safety of the cabling in your home?

If you had old appliances from pre-1960s you probably would have upgraded them by now. But often the old, unsafe wiring in our Melbourne homes can go unnoticed!

Kenner Electrics are your local, trusted house rewiring experts for Melbourne homes throughout the eastern suburbs.

Old, Unsafe and Dangerous Electrical Wiring

Old electrical wiring, recalled cable or improper cable use can cause serious electrical hazards in homes. If your house was built before 1980, Energy Safe Victoria recommends that it be inspected to make sure that the cabling is safe and in good condition.

If your home is over 30 years old it may have lead sheathed cables or old single-insulated cotton/rubber cabling (which are now no longer compliant). The insulation on these types of cable has significantly deteriorated since its installation, and any disturbance could expose live wires. This creates a major fire hazard, as well as a risk of electric shock.

Old, unsafe wiring in older homes requires rewiring with Modern TPS Cabling (Thermoplastic Sheath), which provides long-lasting, reliable insulation of cabling throughout your house to prevent fires and electrical shock hazards. If your home does not have earth wiring to the light fittings, this can be installed at the same time as the rewire to provide protection from electric shock.

Any DIY electrical modifications that have been made on the house also present a risk of fire or electric shock. The main safety issues related to the presence of unlicensed electrical wiring include the use of the wrong cabling, undersized cabling, or exposed live components.

Do you know what type of cabling is in your home? Ensuring the electrical safety of your home is a vital part of home maintenance, and the only way to be sure is to get your cabling inspected by a licensed electrician. Experienced house rewiring electricians like Kenner Electrics will be able to identify the type of cabling and also provide recommendations for the best solution to keep your home and family safe.

Common Cabling Problems that Require a House Rewire

Is dangerous cabling putting your home at risk?

  • Cotton or Black Rubber insulation – these old types of cable insulation have not stood the test of time and require a partial or whole house rewire. They present a serious risk of electrocution or fire because the existing insulation will have deteriorated severely and no longer provides protection from the internal live cabling. Electricians are obligated to report serious cases to ESV as they pose a serious safety risk.
  • Recalled cable – a type of cable branded as Infinity or Olsent Cable was sold through Masters throughout Victoria from 2012-2013. This cable had faulty insulation which becomes brittle quickly and creates a serious risk of electrocution or fire if it is not replaced. The ACCC has issued a mandatory recall notice, so if you have this type of cable you need the services of a trusted house rewiring electrician.
  • Incorrect type of cable – this could include electrical cables that are not double insulated, wiring without an earth cable or under-sized cables. This type of mistake is most likely caused by DIY renovators or inexperienced electricians.
  • Unsafe installation – if your cabling has been thrown haphazardly around your roof space or underfloor space, then it may have been installed by a DIY installer or a lazy electrician. If it is not properly secured and protected then it is unsafe, as it can be easily damaged, stepped on or pulled out when people enter those areas.
  • Exposed cables – installing exposed cables in accessible locations was a common practice in the past, such as clipping cables to the surface of a wall inside or outside your home. However this poses a risk of damage and live parts being exposed. Cabling should be installed through the roof or walls so that it can't be touched by people or pets, or covered by conduit/ducting if there is no other alternative. Modern licensed house rewiring electricians will always install properly insulated cables.
  • Non-UV protected outdoor cabling – if you have cabling installed outdoors where it gets wet or exposed to sunlight, it needs to be UV and weather rated. Otherwise moisture could enter the connections, or the insulation could be deteriorated by UV and cause power outages.

Rewiring a House? Do It On Your Own Terms

Electrical Distributors (ie. United Energy) can issue a defect notice to homes in the event of a major electrical fault caused by unsafe wiring. Under the defect notice you’re either given a short window of time to rectify the fault (which usually requires partial or whole house rewiring) before they shut off the power to your house or they may simply shut off power if they deem the house too unsafe.

If you’re aware of old or deteriorated wiring in your home, why not have it rewired on your own terms without the threat or urgency of disconnection?

Adam and Jimmy were such lovely people and were very easy to communicate with. The job got done very efficiently, and they were always considerate of the home and left no mess whatsoever. After the safety check, they completed some additional works on the same day which worked out perfectly! Would 100% recommend!

Jimmy on site and Shannon in the office have been helpful, courteous, professional and efficient. On time, clearly explained the work to be done and then demonstrated when the work had been completed. Accommodating, competitively priced and responsive. If you need an electrician in South East of Melbourne, these folks are the ones.
We engaged Kenner Electrics, Shannon, Tim and the team to help with Electrical Repair Works. Would like to highlight their absolute professionalism, reliability and friendly service. They not only fix the issue, but also take the time to explain the works being completed in simple terms to the customer. When they inform that they'll arrive at a certain time, you can be absolutely guaranteed they will. Providing excellent Customer Service is paramount for them. Therefore, would recommend them for all your electrical maintenance & repairs.

Found this company on Google, not knowing them previously. Easy to call and book. Additionally, they gave a clear estimated of arrival. The electricians also gave us a pre-call so that we knew they were 30 minutes away. We had Electricians Tim and Max, and they were great! Quick to diagnose the problem, and explain it all to me. Additionally, break down the costing, and asked permission to proceed. We now have a working switch and bathroom fan. The overall end to end process was very professional and to a high standard.
