House Rewiring Experts in Melbourne

Electrical wiring runs through every room of your home — powering lights, appliances and everyday essentials. But have you ever thought about the safety of your home’s wiring?
Flickering lights, tripping circuits or a lack of safety switches can all be signs of ageing or faulty wiring. While most of us have upgraded our appliances over the years, the old and unsafe wiring hidden in many Melbourne homes often goes unnoticed.

At Kenner Electrics, we’re your local house rewiring experts, trusted by homeowners across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. Whether your wiring is outdated or showing signs of wear, our licensed electricians can safely rewire your home using modern TPS cabling that reduces fire and electric shock risks.

Why Rewiring Matters

Do you know what type of cabling is in your home?

Homes built before the 1980s may still have lead-sheathed, cotton or rubber cabling that have broken down over time. These materials are now deteriorated, non-compliant and pose a serious safety hazard. For this reason, Energy Safe Victoria recommends electrical inspections to check for old, unsafe wiring in older homes. Rewiring replaces these with durable, compliant TPS cabling — and allows us to install earth wiring to light fittings at the same time for added protection.

DIY electrical work or unlicensed alterations can also create risks, including exposed live wires or undersized cabling. A professional inspection by a licensed electrician is the only way to know your home’s electrical system is safe.

How Much Does a Rewire Cost?

As a general guide, a smaller partial rewire may cost between $5,000 and $10,000, while larger or more complex rewires typically range between $10,000 and $25,000. Homes that are double-storey, solid brick, or heritage-listed can be more challenging to access, which may increase the cost.

When you book a rewire inspection with Kenner Electrics, our electrician will visit your home to assess the current wiring and discuss your options. During this visit, we’ll provide a provisional estimate so you can decide whether to proceed with the job. Once the works begin, we’ll provide a more accurate quote after the first day or two, once we’ve uncovered the full extent of the existing wiring. This ensures that you receive transparent pricing based on the actual condition of your electrical system — as it’s often difficult to determine the full scope before work commences.

Common Cabling Problems that Require a House Rewire

Is dangerous cabling putting your home at risk? Many Melbourne homes still contain outdated or unsafe wiring that can lead to electric shock or fire. Here are some of the most common cabling issues that mean your home may need rewiring:

  • Cotton or black rubber insulation: These old cable types deteriorate badly over time and no longer protect against live wires, posing a serious fire and electrocution risk. In severe cases, electricians are required to report them to Energy Safe Victoria.
  • Recalled cable: Faulty Infinity or Olsent cable, sold through Masters stores from 2012–2013, has brittle insulation and is subject to an ACCC mandatory recall. If you suspect your home has this cable, it must be replaced immediately.
  • Incorrect cable type: Wiring that isn’t double insulated, lacks an earth wire, or is undersized often results from DIY or unqualified electrical work — and can be extremely unsafe.
  • Poor or unsafe installation: Cables thrown loosely in roof or underfloor spaces can be damaged easily, creating hazards. All cabling should be properly secured, protected and installed by a licensed electrician.
  • Exposed cables: Older homes may have cabling clipped to walls or fences, where it can be touched or damaged. Modern standards require cables to be concealed or protected in conduit.
  • Non-UV rated outdoor cabling: Outdoor wiring must be UV- and weather-rated to prevent insulation breakdown, moisture damage and power faults.

Rewiring a House? Do It On Your Own Terms

If unsafe wiring causes a serious electrical fault, Electrical Distributors (like United Energy) can issue a defect notice requiring urgent repairs — often meaning a full or partial rewire. In some cases, they can even disconnect your power immediately.

Rather than waiting for a fault or emergency, it’s safer (and less stressful) to rewire your home on your own terms with help from the trusted team at Kenner Electrics.

Great job, clear communication, on time Also, the icing on the cake - Andre worked alone and let himself out. He cleaned up so well I couldn't even tell he'd been there. Unheard of in my experience of trade work

Awesome work by Raymond and the Kenner crew in getting a very poorly positioned NBN access point to my actual router. The amazing attitude, and positive vibes give great confidence to the work being done, even though the installation work was challenging. This is the second piece of data work the team have done, and I'm delighted with the results of both. Will absolutely use again if needed.
