Securing the overhead mains connection for long-term electrical safety
Barry from Glen Waverley got in touch with Kenner Electrics after his electricity distributor advised that there was a problem with his Point of Attachment (POA) — the connection point where overhead power lines from the street attach to a home’s structure. This is typically mounted high on the fascia or roofline and is critical for safely delivering electricity into the property. If the POA becomes loose or detached, it can place stress on the mains cables and potentially lead to electrical hazards or loss of supply.

Why the Point of Attachment (POA) Matters
Loose or damaged POAs can lead to electrical hazards and power disconnection
Your Point of Attachment is where the overhead power supply connects to your home, typically through a hook or bracket mounted to the fascia. If the POA becomes loose or damaged, it can place unsafe tension on your power cables, risking electrical faults, property damage or disconnection by your electricity distributor. A secure and compliant POA ensures your home stays safely connected to the grid.
Safe, Temporary Repair for a Detached POA
New hook installation secured to hardwood framing behind the fascia
On inspection, we found that the existing POA hook had come away from the fascia board, which was beginning to rot. It had previously only been screwed into soft timber, so to make the connection safe, we replaced the hook and secured it using a nut and bolt into the solid hardwood frame behind the fascia. This ensured the overhead cable was once again properly supported and compliant with safety standards.

Structural Timber Issues and Next Steps
Fascia board replacement recommended to maintain long-term compliance
We advised Barry that while this repair is secure for now, the fascia board itself will need to be replaced down the track. As the timber continues to degrade, it won’t be suitable for long-term structural support — so a full fascia repair and POA refit will be necessary in future. POA replacements can also be done alongside an electrical supply upgrade, if Barry finds that his home needs more capacity to run appliances like air-conditioners, EV chargers or high-powered induction cooktops.

Going Beyond the POA Repair
Home Electrical Safety Inspection, switchboard advice and smoke alarm review
While we were there, we offered a Home Electrical Safety Inspection (HSI) and discussed other areas of the home’s electrical system. Barry still had an old-style fuse board, so we chatted about the benefits of upgrading to a modern switchboard with RCBO protection. We also reviewed the home’s smoke alarms, explaining the importance of replacing them every 10 years with reliable photoelectric models. Barry mentioned he’d be booking us back in for these upgrades in the coming weeks.
